Pierre Paul Makoumbé is a professional percussionist, author, composer and performer, born in Port-au-Prince (Haiti).

Among the activities he has taken part in, he learnt to play the drum with the Grands Sanba (traditional Haitian music professionals), who have kept the memory of the tradition throughout Africa in Haiti, and these ancestral rhythms are very present in his music, which he calls Radah, meaning Positive Energy in an African dialect. He uses this same positive message in his drumming to convey a message of love, justice and peace. Since the drum represents the heartbeat of all humans, Makoumbé proposes a moment of silence to listen to the rhythm of the drum, which speaks of unity, love, justice, peace and joy.

Pierre Paul Makoumbé’s music represents Haitian culture, which is linked to African culture. It also includes Nyabinghi, which comes from Uganda.

Makoumbé arrived in Montreal in 2000 with the group Sokute, and since then he has taken part in numerous festivals and events as an artist or musician: Festival du Mois Créole (2022), Montreal Haitian Festival, Montreal International Jazz Festival, Francofolies de Montréal, Montreal International Reggae Festival, Rastafest Toronto, Festival Nuits d’Afrique, Cirque du Soleil, among others.

He has also collaborated with and shared the stage with many artists from here and abroad: Lorraine Klaassen, Wycliff Jean and Lauryn Hill from the group Refugee, Bitova Oba, Zab Maboungo, Third World, Marcia Griffiths, Boukman and Eddy François, Tony Rebel, Émeline Michel, Éval Manigat’s group Tiaka at the Calgary International Blues Festival, and more.

He is also the founder of the group Zikingkow, recognised by the Uprizing news paper-directed by Ras Leon Soul in Toronto-as an important artist who is bringing a new wind to the Reggae world…”No matter where the group Zikingkow appears on stage, the crowd goes wild, because the groove (Radah ) of Zikingkow is unique in world music…”.
