Menad Harkat is a Kabyle-speaking Algerian artist. He was born in 1985 in Selloum, a picturesque village perched on the majestic mountains of Kabylia. His passion for music was awakened at an early age, when he was lulled by the traditional songs of his mother and grandmother.

Around the age of 17, Menad took up the guitar under the benevolent tutelage of his uncle and began his artistic career performing at village festivities and at his lycée. During his university years, Menad stood out for his commitment and militancy for just causes. He founded the music group “Iskra”, which toured universities in the centre of the country, winning over crowds with its raw talent and unforgettable voice. One success followed another, making him a rising figure on the Algerian artistic scene. His deep convictions naturally led him to join the legendary group Debza in 2010, where he first joined as a backing guitarist before becoming the lead vocalist. It was a formative experience that strengthened his position as a committed artist. In 2015, the group released its latest album, embodying the values they hold dear.

In search of new artistic horizons, Menad made the leap to the United States in 2016. This new step marked the beginning of his solo career, where he quickly became the musical ambassador of his community in North America. His captivating performances regularly light up iconic New York venues such as the East Village and Brooklyn, including Nomad and El Momento.

Menad draws his inspiration from a kaleidoscope of influences, skilfully blending North African and Western sounds. His music transcends cultural boundaries, offering a deeply rich and immersive listening experience. For Menad, music is a way of life. Set to Berber rhythms, he readily dips into folk music, flamenco, Kabyle folkore and, of course, chaâbi, all of which become veritable springboards for artistic encounters.
