Dakka Dembélé, from Ivory Coast and Mali, began his career with his friend Gounga. They soon became fascinated by reggae music, incorporating Mandingo sounds from their own cultural roots.

Just as they were about to release their first album in 2002 in Abidjan, the two friends were forced into exile in Mali for socio-political reasons. It was there that they met Tiken Jah Fakoly, who inspired and motivated them to pursue their career.

In 2007, Dakka decided to go solo. This took him to Quebec, where he first revived his first trade by opening his own shoemaking business before returning to music. In 2013, he returned to the live scene, collaborating with a host of local musicians, including Abdoulaye Koné, the Rootsteppers, David Mobio, Namori, Ons Barnat and Solid Ground. The richness and diversity of the Montreal scene inspired him, and he continued to develop his musical style. During this period, he played on many Montreal stages: Festival Nuits d’Afrique, Syli d’or, Atmosph’air, Jardins Gamelins, etc.

In 2018, he met Apotcho Strong and Guy Kaye, with whom he is working to record his debut album. Each of the co-producers brings a wealth of experience and a particular musical touch in line with their own backgrounds. The album was launched in spring 2020.

Dakka’s music is inspired by her African experience and tells of the grandeur and decadence of the modern world. Like his role models Alpha Blondy, Lucky Dube, Ismaël Isaac and Koko Dembélé, Dakka vehemently denounces social injustice, poverty and corruption.

Dakka’s music is imbued with rhythmic, committed melodies that transport you into a world that is both playful and disturbing. Let yourself be tempted by Dakka, a journey that leaves no one indifferent.
