BIOGRAPHY

Paulina Sotomayor comes from the land of mariachi and the beating sun. From folk tradition, the progression of her urban Mexican rhythms can be traced back through her time as singer and drummer with Jefes del Desierto, a band she founded in 2011, and as part of the duo Sotomayo, which she formed with her brother Raúl in 2014, to explore Latin electronic music. But the call of independence is strong in this young woman and led to the emergence of Pahua in 2020, at the start of the pandemic. This latest project has allowed her to come into her own. The artist has delved further into the Latin electronic sound to the delight of her fans who are rediscovering her talents. In the spirit of the wind, she becomes a DJ warrior, with mixes that reflect the recesses of her soul. Her lyrics are composed to the tune of self-discovery, her raison d’être and live performances. On the hypnotic “Vavayó,” the singer’s ethereal voice is as fine as a vaporous blade, while her colourful chaplet and subtle smile are reminiscent of Frida Kahlo, evoking Mexican femininity unleashed in a thousand exquisite fragrances.

Imbued with Latin American spirit, Pahua and her accomplices combine synthesizers, maracas, percussive energy and flute effects to envelop us in an otherworldly dimension. Looking for music that is genuinely upbeat, compassionate, without a hint of bitterness? Then you will want to experience Pahua, as have thousands of fans across the Americas and Europe as well. Montreal is clearly in for a real treat! To whet your appetite, check out listening platforms featuring her music, including her compilation Arrullos Mexicanos Vol. 1. Mexico definitely has its blazing torch that goes by the name of Pahua. Absolutely dazzling!
