Dobet Gnahoré is an artist, singer, dancer, percussionist, honoring the rhythms of the Ivory Coast through a voice undeniably recognized as exceptional.
Originally from the west of the Ivory Coast, Dobet Gnaoré is the eldest daughter of Boni Gnahoré, master percussionist of the Ki Yi M’Bock Company of Abidjan directed by Werewere Liking. She left school at the age of 12 to join her father’s company of artists where she learned theater, dance, music and singing. She practiced several styles of music.
After three years of training in the performing arts, she left Kiyi M’bock to join Beatrice Combe’s large Afro-contemporary dance company Tchétché, where she stayed for a year and gained more experience.
In 1996, she met the French guitarist Colin Laroche de Féline who was at the time the guitarist of her father Boni Gnahoré, with whom she composed several songs. Together, they formed the duo Ano Neko in 1999, which means “Let’s create together” in Bété (Dobé Gnaoré’s mother tongue). The album Ano Neko was released in 2004 with 16 tracks mainly composed in Bété.
In the early 2000s she participated in Masa and released four albums that led to a world tour, and won a Grammy Award.
With her sixth album “Couleur”, released under the label Cumbancha, Dobet reveals a music in her image, free. In addition to a fusion of Afro-electro sounds studded with catchy melodies, this album is also distinguished by a fusion of the modernity of Ivorian urban music with the tradition of its ancestral rhythms.
Dobet Gnahoré pays tribute to the women of today and tomorrow, and magnifies this new generation of bold, strong and determined African women.
