BIOGRAPHIE

Sisters in music, the pair gives their all to hip-hop, without holding anything back! Inspired by their male counterparts, Daara J and Positive Black Soul, undisputed Senegalese masters of the genre, Mamy Victory and Defa boldly take it on with fiery female power and mastery. Without the slightest hesitation, they sing and chant their calls for justice, for the rights of Teraanga’s girls and women. Though that fight is far from over, with rhyme and rhythm, a world of possibilities opens up to turning things around and creating a better world…

As beautiful as they are fierce with  mic in hand, the duo has made their mark in Dakar, and even France. Firmly grounded in Senegal’s history and respect for rituals, the young women’s keen insight also runs through Oh Maliko, their EP released in 2023. You can almost smell the city streets in their urban arrangements, as if you were in New York or Paris. The magic happens when you listen to their bold voices, rapping in honour of women (Jigeen in Wolof) backed by synthesizers and harmonies… explosive!

Mamy Victory and Defa are so charismatic, you can’t help but being drawn to their charm and the flamboyant colours of their Africa. In just two years, they have been crowned the “Queens of Dakar’s urban scene.” Borrowing from Afrobeat and the popular “amapiano” wave —hybrid of deep house, jazz and lounge—the pair are perfectly positioned on the starting blocks aimed towards international stardom. And there is no doubt that they will get there, with their agile dancing and vocal magic, as powerful as it is gentle, and as refreshing as Senegal’s national hibiscus drink! So, get ready, because Def MaMa Def is going to take you on a musical voyage to the “Gateway to Africa,” where womanhood reigns supreme.
