BIOGRAPHY

Christian Obam, whose full name is Jean-Jacques Christian Obam Edjo’o, was born into music. A musical prodigy, he began at the piano when he was just five years old and was still young when he discovered the power of the bass. He had what it takes to be a great among greats. Highly esteemed in Cameroon, this multi-instrumentalist has played alongside the most distinguished of musicians. A defining moment in his rise to fame occurred in 2013 when he joined the Super Étoile de Dakar under legendary Senegalese artist Youssou N’Dour following a memorable concert at the Paris-Bercy in France. Together they toured the globe from 2013 to 2017. It is in Senegal that he really honed his musical skills. The country fell in love with him and the feeling was mutual. His popularity soared as he rubbed shoulders with Angélique Kidjo, Johnny Clegg and even Bono! The gifts of this composer and keeper of the musical score are irresistible.

A pillar of jazz fusion, Obam brings out the best in both the simplest and most textured arrangements. Accompanied by three musicians, the singer presents himself with bearing, his guitar seemingly an extension of himself. On “Forgive me,” he delivers his own melody, his composer’s instinct, and it works like a charm! Chameleon-like as an accompanist, he shines with his whole being as on the sensual “Juste une nuit” featuring singer Iza, released in 2022, or in rap and hip-hop mode with Ténor on “Humilité.” Overflowing with generosity, there’s no limit to his versatility, which can be heard in the subtleties of his soft voice and soulful sound reminiscent of R. Kelly. Come and groove to the power of bassist-singer Christian Obam and discover the rhythms of Cameroon, Senegal and the whole world…
