- Lydol (Cameroon) – 1 February 2024 – Club Balattou
Lydol, the first female slammer to be shortlisted for the RFI Découvertes Prize, will open the 2023 edition of the Black History Month. Ambassador for the African-European Union Collaboration in 2022, she released two albums and several singles, while broadening her artistic horizons. As well as international performances, she actively promotes slam outside ‘intimate’ circles and runs festivals such as PluriElles and Slam’Up. Founder of the Science Slam Cameroun competition, she also runs the SHEroes Association, supporting women who are victims of violence. Her writing workshops, Style haut à stylo, reflect her commitment to coaching new talent.

- Lorraine Klaasen (South Africa / Ontario) – 10 February 2024 – Théâtre Fairmount
Célèbre ses 40 ans de carrière !
Lorraine Klaasen, daughter of legendary South African jazz singer Thandie Klaasen, is one of the few South African artists to have preserved the classic sound of township music, which remains the most distinctive sound to emerge from South Africa. Born and raised in Soweto, Lorraine has electrified audiences around the world with her dynamic stage presence and showmanship. Lorraine was influenced by the giants artists of South African music in the 1950s and 1960s, such as Miriam Makeba (who was a close friend of Lorraine and Thandie), as well as Dolly Rathebe, Dorothy Masuka, Sophie Mgcina and Busi Mhlongo, who frequented her mother’s home. Baptized “The Queen” of the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique. Having performed there from the very first editions, Lorraine Klaasen will be making a comeback to celebrate her 40-year career.

- Roots Daughters invited by WorldWild Soundsystem – 17 February 2024 – Le Ministère
The concept is becoming a tradition. After Mungo’s Hifi in 2019, Iration Steppas in 2022, Lek Sen and Jah Observer in 2023, it’s now the turn of two women and activists from the Berlin-based sound systems collective Roots Daughters to take center stage at this 12kW-plus session, which promises to give off a unique vibe of empowerment.
Their guests founded Roots Daughters in 2009, inspired by Rastafari and the Jamaican and British sound system culture. Their sessions are a space for reflection, connection, empowerment through a sharing of vibes and music. Julie and Jahminta are passionate vinyl collectors who will introduce the public to reggae music in all its beauty and versatility – from its foundations to more recent releases.
It’s hard to get more passionate than the WWSS crew! For the past fifteen years, they’ve been fine-tuning their sound system in the purest Jamaican tradition. The home-made boxes, the analogue equipment, the sirens and other sound effects, the vinyl, the MC: everything contributes to this authenticity.

- Bia Ferreira (Brazil) – 22 February 2024 – Club Balattou
Singer, songwriter, activist and fierce defender of the LGBTQI2S+ community worldwide, Bia Ferreira defines her music as MMP: Música de Mulher Preta (Black Woman Music). She broke into the public consciousness in 2017 with the track Cota Não é Esmola, about the importance of the quota system for black people’s access to university. In addition to 13 million views on YouTube and several million plays on Spotify, the song became a mandatory reading for the entrance exam to the University of Brasília. She was nominated for the 2018 Women in Music Awards. On her last album, Igreja Lesbiteriana: Um Chamado, the messages are hitched to a carriage of funky rhythms, reggae and soulful ballad grooves. This year, she has performed on some of Portugal’s biggest stages, including a memorable concert at LMM Sines.

- Sona Jobarteh (Brazil) – 8 March 2024 – Le National
“From her masterful playing, strong melodies emerge, resplendent, often joyful energy (…) marking the accession of an artist capable of applying a modern sheen to West-African traditions (La Presse, 2022).” This British-Gambian artist proudly takes centre stage with her majestic kora: an unusual but welcome sight that inspires hope, seeing a woman confidently master this iconic and symbolic instrument; seeing her embody the tradition and fully embrace her griot status; seeing her not hold back from her desire to shake up conventions even more with a touch of jazz, as she garners tens of thousands of views on virtual platforms. Her second album, Badinyaa Kumoo (2022), which was seven years in the making, also features the legendary Youssou N’Dour.
Dividing her time between England and Gambia, Sona Jobarteh is blazing a path for women Kora players in Africa. From New York to Paris, the media follows her every step. And she doesn’t only appear on stages but also participates in international conferences. Her boundless humanity spills over into her social concerns, and she has taken an active role regarding music education in Gambia. After a memorable concert on the outdoor stage at the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique last July, Sona will be performing indoors this time, accompanied by her young son on balafon.
