Versatile creator of sensations, the delightful Alice Chipo Nyambiya doesn’t simply sing, or write, or passionately embody her native Zimbabwe; she has lived and breathed its essence since childhood, beginning from when she was a chorister at the age of nine, she was later profoundly touched by grace during an experience in a university marching band. The gifted musicologist had found her calling. As she plays her mbira—a thumb piano dating back thousands of years and inscribed onto UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—she adds a genuine touch of sub-Saharan rhythm without losing a single note of this heritage. Chipo’s folk and pop tunes have the power to unite all people in perpetual harmony. This gift, which she credits to God, led her to follow the path of her fellow stars between 2016 and 2019, the likes of Jah Prayzah of 3rd Generation Band fame, Hope Masike, the “Mbira Princess,” Oliver Mtukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo, AKA “the Lion of Zimbabwe.” Now living in Canada, Chipo has become one of Nuits d’Afrique’s favourite female vocalists. She will be releasing a solo album in 2023, which promises to result in a wave of recognition and soulful conquests.
