In Colombia, a palenque is a free village, founded by African slaves who have fled. In the palenque of San Basilio, birthplace of the Sexteto Tabala in the 1930s, their descendants speak a creole that has a Bantu resonance. Son palenquero is the meeting-place of their culture with that of the Cubans who came to work on the neighbouring plantations. Lamellophone, marimbula, bongos, maracas – truly mythical!
