Ecologists well ahead of their time, champions of recycling and recuperation, the musicians in this atypical group have been producing a unique avant-garde sound since the 1960s, almost by chance, with their country’s traditional beats meeting experimental rock and electroacoustics. These Grammy Award nominees, praised by Les Inrockuptibles magazine and appearing on major media lists of top albums of the year, have collaborated with Björk and Herbie Hancock, among others.

Biography of the artist:

 Konono No. 1 (or All-Powerful Likembé Konono No. 1, its full name) got started in the late 1960s in the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the instigation of Mingiedi Mawangu. A virtuoso on the likembé. That instrument, sometimes called the “thumb piano,” consists of metal strips attached to a wooden sounding board. The musicians in Konono No. 1 come from a region straddling Congo ...
