Flo
Biography :
Flo, whose real name is Florian Feral, is not yet 30 years old, but life has already led him across three continents: Africa, the continent of his birth and his childhood, Europe, the continent of his adolescence, and America, the continent of his adult life. And all of this filled with and guided by his lone passion: music.
He spent the first 10 years of his life in Cameroon. He grew up in an atmosphere of colourful traditional music with strong beats. He then turned to a whole other life, in southern France. There he discovered music that was the polar opposite of what he had known up to then: French song and rock. He also became a bass player in a punk band.
While at high school, he decided to develop his knowledge at a music school in North Carolina. He took advantage of this to travel to continents he had not yet seen: Asia, Oceania and Latin America. He ended up settling in New York and staying there nine years. There he became involved in everything, played in various groups with a proliferation of styles from funk to reggae, with numerous concerts.
Now, just 25 years old, he has decided to establish his base in Montreal, without giving up his appetite for travel and discovery. His album How are you doing, which came out in the summer of 2010, is clear evidence of this: written in Brooklyn, recorded in the French Basque country, mixed in Montreal and mastered in Jamaica’s prestigious Tuff Gong studio – an indication of his fruitful itinerary and of an artistic approach that aims to be open to everyone. On this disc are blended various influences from his own history, along with beats moving between reggae and R&B. To share his experience and knowledge, he has created a label, called Deep Roots, bringing together artists of every sort, musical explorers.
Flo is also the founder of L’Éveil Musical de Flo, a music school intended for children 5 and under to initiate the next generation of spectators and musicians. This project consists of awakening children to music, based on a creative original concept: the use of pieces with themes devised specially for them, enabling them to feel the beats and recreate them on small percussion instruments.
At present, Flo is preparing his second album, which he says will be more marked by reggae roots.
