Erik

Guadeloupe

Biography :

Erik began his musical career in Guadeloupe in 2001, playing a key role with Saian Supa Crew, a French group that no longer exists but that was very much in vogue at the time. This very good start was confirmed through his participation in the Stardom talent revelation competition in 2003. His musical journey continued in Paris, where he went to study languages, with a crucial encounter: he met composer Siam Lee, and this proved to be a decisive step in affirming his musical identity.

Things moved quickly. In 2008, Erik went on stage at the Ville des Musiques du Monde festival and, the following year, he appeared in several Paris venues and at the Francofolies de La Rochelle. He soon won a trophy as Artiste révélation des Arts Afro-caribéens. The same year his first album, Chayé Kow, came out and was reissued in 2010 in a collector’s version.

Erik sings his lyrics in Creole, French and English. His melodies alternate between Caribbean jazz, biguine and African rhythmics, bringing audiences into a world of sounds that are warm and cheerful, showing depth and perpetual motion. To the sound of the ka drum, Erik shouts out the revolts of youth who feel cheated, the sufferings of exile, and disillusion.

In addition to his early companion Siam Lee, another source has emerged: Manuel Mondésir. Together, they develop an original musical style that belongs only to them but that is undeniably a faithful reflection of today’s youth, caught between optimism and disappointment, between energy and the fear of tomorrow.
